What is Triz?

Triz is a methodology to solve problems. It is widely used in innovation, product development and other problem-solving activities. Triz refers to Theory of Inventive Problem Solving.

Triz helps you solve a problem with predefined methods. Triz is also helpful in product development. Triz defines a set of principles. Some of the interesting case studies of Triz I have listed below (you don’t need to download any case studies. You can go through the overview and easily understand how people used Triz to solve their innovative problems).

If you want to improve one feature in a product, the quality of another feature may be reduced. As for example, in a combustion vehicle, if you want to increase the power of the engine, the fuel consumption of the vehicle may also increase. This reduces the mileage of the vehicle. In Triz, a matrix called Contradiction Matrix is defined. From Contradiction Matrix, we can figure out that if we try to improve one feature of a product, which other features of the product will be negatively impacted. Then the matrix tells which Triz principles can overcome this contradiction.

Paragraph 3.8.3 Contradiction matrix of the following research paper vividly explains the use the Triz to eliminate the contradiction.
